Treaty of waitangi.

I can compare and contrast map

A few things I found were that the treaty was signed on 4th of Feb 1840, and that the British were trying to take over NZ but they couldn't because the Maori fought back so they made a treaty.
One more thing I would like to find out is why did the British want to take over the land but gave them guns and weapons to fight back?

Parliament

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned in NZ parliament are:

  • Patsy Reddy is the new governor general
  • Other countries are using democracy
  • Bill English is the deputy PM

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

In this project I was working with Alex, Jake and Joseph B and we decided to create a WA we filter

Here is a link to what we made.
In this project we decided that our success criteria were: (list the criteria you created on slide 7)

Overall our project didn't meet this criteria because we didn't get to test the water filter.

Koru games reflection

The activity I did was VOLLEYBALL!

Two highlights were...

(1) Being able to have fun and compete with other teams because we had a a lot of banter.
(2) Coming 3rd out of five teams because it is a big achievement.

I proud of working as a team because without working as a team we would never have came third.

Some advice on Koru Games for next years year 7's is, try giving a new sport a try, you might enjoy it.

Writing Short story.

Blog Post Title - My Short Story
For this piece of writing I have focussing on my vocabulary and punctuation. I have been learning to: - delete the ones that are not at the standard you are aiming for
  • use a range of precise vocabulary to communicate meaning (Year ⅞)
  • use all basic punctuation independently and attempt more complex punctuation (eg semicolons, colons, parentheses) (Year 7/8)
The pieces of my writing that are highlighted green are where I have shown my vocabulary and punctuation goal
My Story...
‘BUZZ! BUZZ!’ Screamed Uncle San’s alarm clock. ‘Yes!’ Screamed Uncle San, another great day for school. As you can tell Uncle San really fancys going to school, he has never missed a day of school, he is an average Asian teen, 16 ½ and he really really enjoys dancing. He started dancing ever since he could speak, but he has never actually performed live in front of a huge crowd, he only dances at the playground and records it for YouTube.

Anyway back to the story, Uncle San was on his way to school to go to  the playground, so he could make his new weekly vid, but on the way there a man came up to him, he said his name was Uncle Chan. He told Uncle San that he has seen his outstanding vids and would like him to perform at his show on Sunday, Uncle San was so overjoyed he agreed to it.

So Uncle San went to the playground to announce his big debut, but when Uncle San started to ascend the tower he slipped and fell down, and then Uncle San swore aloud. At this moment Uncle San knew his legs were broken. Fortunately Uncle San had his phone on him, unfortunately it HAD NO CHARGE! So Uncle San started cry because 1. His legs were broken 2. He had no way of getting someone to help him and 3. His phone had died…

When Uncle San woke up he felt a bit woozy, the only thing he could remember was the fainting in the playground, so Uncle San looked around curiously to find where he was, HE WAS IN HIS HOME ON THE COUCH!? Uncle San was so confused, so he tried getting up but then he just fell on to the ground, ‘oh that's right’ thought Uncle San angrily ‘My legs are broken!’
So Uncle San had no choice but crawl to his laptop and search up how to dance with his arms. You might of forgotten but Uncle San agreed to perform at Uncle Chan’s show and he was still determined to perform.

When Sunday came Uncle San was so ready, he went to the show early. When he arrived Uncle Chan was there too, he was wearing a navy blue tux, some how Uncle San thought the tuxedo suited him. When Uncle Chan saw Uncle San he was in total shock because Uncle San was walking on his hands! ‘So how are going to dance in your condition?!’ Asked Uncle Chan curiously. ‘I'm going to dance on my hands’ Uncle San replied...

When it was time for Uncle San to dance, the audience was as shocked as Uncle Chan was! On the other side, Uncle San was so delighted his time had came. As soon as the lights dimmed and the music started, Uncle San started swirling around on the stage like a wind in Autumn. Eventually, Uncle San had finished dancing, the audience went wild! Uncle San had never felt this happy before.

Five months later Uncle San had become a WORLD SENSATION!! He was living the dream of all dreams, he even got his own show about his life, had his own merchandise and his own dance class.
Uncle San could never been happier.

Merit evidence: Bake sale

18.5.16
Can do

Today the bake sale was on to day to fund raise for the yr8's trip to wellington, first we got some tables from our class and set up three stations around the school, then we got all the baking and placed them at the tables, after that we got some class for firsts. Eventually when every class had all had some we open it to everyone. I showed my care values by making sure everyone with money got some. (Community)

Wednesday 11 May 2016

Merit evidence: Technology

11.5.16
Must do

Yesterday I went to technology, I sat at the back of the bus with five other guys. I only talk to them so the bus wouldn't be so loud and so the bus driver could concentrate. When we got there I went to my class, in class I got a prizes because I was really helpful with using the computers. On the way back to school I sat next to the same people and talked to them only. I showed my care values by helping others and only talking the people next to me on the bus.

Wednesday 4 May 2016

WALT: I can describe the structure of a short story.

Something I have learned about the structure of short stories is it has short paragraphs.
After reading some short stories two things I will remember when I write my own short story are get to the problem quickly and keep it short and punchy

Thursday 14 April 2016

Maths goal evidence

WALT: Find and validate data measures eg MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE AND RANGE from appropriate displays.

Wednesday 13 April 2016

Writing Exposition.

WALT: Follow the writing process to write an exposition.

For writing we are writing about expositions, I am comparing Mother Teresa and J.k.Rowling. Here is my conclusion, where I compared them:

Overall Mother Teresa is a better leader because she looked out for others before herself, unlike J.k.Rowling who just entertains people with her writing.

Music

WWALT: I can describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

Over the past 7 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

I can describe these characteristics in a piece of music

Melody: A series of single that are played repetitively.

Harmony: A ongoing set of chords that go together and they sound good together

Rhythm: The timing of words/notes

Timbre: The special quality of someone's voice that is the the same as the pitch and intensity as the tone and is unique.

Form: The plan that makes the song become a song

Here is an example of my learning --->

Term 1 Integrated learning-leadership

We have been learning all about What makes a good leader.

We identified that good leaders show 6 main character traits. These are integrity, trustworthy, resilient, goal focused, movtivational and active thinker.

The leadership trait that I think I show the most is trustworthy because I put up the flag and take it down when it is my turn

The leadership trait I would most like to develop is goal focused because I'm not that good at setting my self new goals

Something NEW I have learned about leadership is leaders need to show many traits to be a good leader.

The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is extended abstract because I can describe a good/effective leader
(see slide 2 of the leadership modelling book for this)

My next step in learning about leadership is to apply everything that I have learned about leadership to my own leadership roles.

Thursday 7 April 2016

Merit evidence: Leadership meeting task.

Can do

7.4.16

Everyday before school or after.
Putting up the flag, taking it down and taking parents to Ell meetings.

Outside of school:
Mum, My computer.
After school and in the mornings.
Finish chores, homework and sleep.

My next step is to be able to balance my responsibilities through out the year.

Wednesday 6 April 2016

I can apply effective strategies when researching using Google search engine.

Year 9/10 - I can find, select and use a range of texts for specific learning purposes in different tasks and learning areas of the curriculum.

For my “Evaluating Leaders” research I have been researching about J.K.Rowling and Mother Teresa.

During this unit I have had to use a range of strategies to find the information I needed on Google. This include:
Writing specifically what I want to find, going on images or videos, crosscheck and reference.

I have achieved this goal because I crosschecked all of my information I found online and then referenced.

My next step is to set a new reading goal.

Maths goal evidence

WALT: Apply standard form, significant figures, rounding, and decimal place value.

Merit evidence: Leaders meeting

Can do

5.4.16

Yesterday at morning tea Mr Ladbrook held a leaders meeting. All we did yesterday at the meeting was catch up and then talk about what we're going to do later in the year. And then Mr Ladbrook let us blog or go out side.

Merit evidence: Technology, on the bus

Must do

5.4.16

Today on the bus to technology I sat with jake on the way to technology. On the way I only talked to jake and I sat down for the whole time. And on the way back to school I did the same so the bus driver could concentrate on getting us to our destination.
I showed my Care Values by respecting the bus and the bus driver by talking quietly.

Thursday 31 March 2016

Maths: Mean, Median,Mode and Range

31.3.16

WALT: Find and validate data measures, eg. MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE and RANGE.
In maths I am learning about mean, median, mode and range. If you do not know what these words mean I will tell you here below...

Mean: First, you add all of the numbers you have, then devise the total by the number of numbers there are.

Median: First you order the numbers you have smallest to biggest, then find the number in the middle.

Mode: Mode is the number that appears the most.

Range: Find the largest number and the smallest number and then subtract those two number.

My writing argument

31.3.16

For writing we have been learning to write an argument using the writing process. The topic was “Are Devices Taking Over Our Lives”.

Something I did really well in my writing was using connectives/conjunctions to make my argument more formal/interesting.

Here is a section of my writing that shows this.

To start off, people’s lives are getting shorter, because of the radiation emitting from the devices, it also has made the chances of getting cancer higher! In addition to that people are also sitting around too long and become fat and lazy, also some people are too lazy to even get up and walk around. Furthermore people are out and about with their heads down all the time and they aren't aware of their surroundings, for example, I read in an article that a man casually strolled into a train with a gun in his hand, no one saw this because they were all looking at their devices, they only noticed until the man shot someone. But, that besides the point, the point is that devices are affecting our lives, not only are they doing so, they can also ruin our schedule.
(The words in green are the connectives/conjunctions)

Wednesday 30 March 2016

PE: Striking and Fielding

30.3.16

WALT: Apply Striking and Fielding activities in a range of sports and activities.

My Strengths

The striking strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were to have a good stance so I can put more power in my shot.

The throwing and catching strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were having soft hands and cupping my hands as well so I can catch the ball without it falling out.

My Next Steps

To improve my striking of a ball I need to keep my eye on the ball because it improves my chance of hitting the ball

To Improve my catching and fielding I need to watch the ball when it is coming into my hands because this helps me catch it.

The game that I enjoyed the most was rounders because it was a game that included striking and fielding and it is a fast and easy game to play.

Thursday 24 March 2016

Reading follow up

Reading follow up

WALT: I can evaluate writers’ purposes and consider how they have used structure and language to suit these purposes.

This is my reading follow up, to complete this follow up we had to read 3 different books. After that we had to identify the authors purpose and then we also had to identify the structure and language that the author used. Once we had completed this, we then had to look for the structure similarity/differences and then the same with the language choices. I think I achieved Extended abstract because I used some strategies to find the authors purpose.

My next step is to find more differences/similarity.

Merit evidence: meeting/playing with the little kids

23.3.16
Must do's

Today at morning tea time I didn't really want to play football today, so I went down to the junior area to hangout with some little kids. I couldn't find any kids that I knew so I decided to go back, and then all of a sudden some kids jump on me and said they would take me to jail. After that I tried to escape, but there was no point in trying. After trying for 10 minutes I gave in and then the bell rang and I then went back to class. I was showing active thinking by going over to the juniors and playing with the kids who didn't have any firends to play with.

Reading activity. Changing the flag

https://docs.google.com/a/oaklands.school.nz/document/d/1QYk83RblP9B_5i1lFmhfyEW_vqhuuL3UHF2aRdCCsz8/edit?usp=docslist_api

This is my Evaluating information chart. We were writing our reason for why we should keep the Current New Zealand flag or chose the new flag, we were learning about all the different reasons/history about the two different flags, then we wrote all over he information we found on the sheet. Then we then we gave reasons why the evidence was either weak, unsure or strong enough to change our opinion about changing the flag or not. I think I did really well because I found lots of information.

Merit evidence: Garden show

Must do

The past few days Alex, Ryan ,Scott, Madyx and I went to Woolstons Working Men's Club for a garden show. On Wednesday and Thursday  we just had to set up our stand. It didn't take to long to set up on Wednesday because on Thursday we did most of the setting up, so today(Friday) we made some beetroot relish to put on some crackers to serve to the people so we could get votes from them, we needed those votes so we could get the people's choice award, we have also have a gold award from the judges. We were competing against 8-10 schools! I showed leadership these past few days by being resilient because some times some things kept falling apart but we kept on trying to fix it.

Thursday 3 March 2016

Merit Evidence: Leadership in the food forest

Must do

Yesterday me and other people worked on the food forest with Mr McAven because at this season that's when most of the flowers seeds come out and the group before us had already took the seeds so now all we have to do is to weed the food forest.

first we had put gloves on so we don't prick our self's.  It was pretty hard to find fitting pair because most of them weren't put together, so after I found a fitting pair I started weeding, it was really frustrating because the bushes were really prickly, after a while I got to use the scissors to cut so it was easier to pull the weeds out, also when I was weeding I found a Praying Mantis and a Snail whilst weeding.

After a while we had finished weed and my fingers were really tired when I pulled them out of the gloves, when I took my gloves of I put the in the box and then Mr McAven asked me to take the box to the shed which happily did so, after that I went to wash my hands and went back to class. I felt really happy because I enjoy gardening.

Merit evidence: Multicultural assembly

25/2/16
MERIT EVIDENCE
Can do
On Thursday the 25th of February we had a multicultural assembly which was run by Honor and I who are the cultural ambassadors for 2016, the assembly was awesome we has lots of different people from different cultures who preform, they preformed Taikwondo(Korean martial arts), dancing and lots of other things! My favourite thing was running the assembly with Honor because it was fun and also it's not something you do all the time! At the assembly the leadership trait I showed was goal focuses be cause I had to focus on my job otherwise I might muck up the assembly and everything would be out of order.

Leadership Training week 2/3

WAL: about to describe the traits of an effective leader.

These two weeks we have been learning about 6 traits that a effective leader has to be a good role model.
The six traits are:
Integrity. A honest person and uses their morals.
Trustworthy. Means that other people can trust you and they have your trust.
Resilient . Someone who doesn't give up and carrys on even when the job gets tough.
Active Thinker. Someone who uses their brain to conquer all sorts of challenges
Goal Focused. A person who works towards their goal and doesn't think about other things.
Motivational. Someone who inspires other people to do things to become a better person.

Our class also came up with a quote that sums up all these traits: 'leadership is a skill of motivating people/team to achieve a goal..

We also have been reading books with leaders who show these traits, we had to write down how they showed these traits, here is one of my sheets: this one is about how Sir Edmund Hilary showed leadership when he was in the Mountains.

Merit evidence: Gardening club

22.2.16
Merit Evidence
Can do
Last week on Thursday I did Gardening club, We were starting to create our model for the competition, this session we were stuffing Scarecrows with straw, I had to show resilience because it was really hard to stuff the straw all the way down to the bottom of the Scarecrow because The straw was wet and it was really prickly, So then after I got dozens of scratches we got the little kids to help to get the dry straw. After we finally finished stuffing the scarecrows the bell rang and we then we went back to class.
